2. Does I need the L-track back plates? Are they required?
The back plates are not required, but they are highly recommended. They eliminate the need to install rivnuts directly into the van’s sheet metal, where there is a small but real risk of a rivnut spinning or failing to set properly. Since the rivnuts are preinstalled in the back plates and aligned with the L-track mounting holes, the installation process becomes much simpler.
