The Autoterm Air 2D is a compact 2 kW diesel air heater for smaller camper vans, trucks, and boat cabins. It burns diesel from the vehicle fuel tank or a separate tank and delivers dry, forced hot air, so the cabin stays warm with the engine off, using 0.10 to 0.24 liters of diesel and 10 to 29 watts of power per hour depending on the setting. Output adjusts from 0.8 to 2.0 kW, and a built-in high altitude sensor keeps it working up to 4,200 m.

This listing lets you configure the heater your build needs: 12V or 24V, Basic Kit or Truck Kit, and a PU-5 dial, PU-27 OLED digital, or PU-28 touch screen controller. The Truck Kit adds the mounting plate, high-temperature duct, and air vent over the Basic Kit. We install these in van builds at our New Port Richey shop. Full specifications, kit contents, install notes, and fitment answers are below.

Dimensions & fitment notes

Heater dimensions: 310 × 119 × 145 mm. Heater weight: 2.9 kg (6.4 kg for the full set). Mounting clearances (per the Autoterm manual): leave at least 50 mm from walls and partitions to the start of the heater inlet opening, and at least 150 mm to the start of the outlet opening - duct runs need considerably more room than that. The Air 2D can be tilted anywhere between 0° and 90° from its standard position, with the wiring staying on the right side or on top. Mount it on a flat surface, in a dry spot protected from water, dirt, and excessive vibration, and keep it clear of flammable or heat-sensitive objects.

Dimensions are per the manufacturer's published specs and are provided as a fitment guide. Master Overland isn't responsible for fitment issues caused by manufacturing variances — when in doubt, measure your opening and email us before ordering.

Installation notes

We install these in our own builds. The short version, following the Autoterm manual:

  • Position: install on a flat surface - an uneven surface can bend the casing and jam the blower fan. The mounting flange should be the only contact with the mounting surface; the casing itself should not touch any surface. The heater can tilt 0-90°, with wires on the right side or on top.
  • Fuel pump: mount it close to the fuel tank (within 1 m), below the low fuel level in the tank, at a slight upward angle, in its flexible rubber clamp so clicking noise does not transfer into the vehicle frame. Keep the fuel line as short as practical (5 m maximum recommended), rising slightly toward the heater, and never run the fuel line inside the cabin.
  • Fuel supply: diesel is drawn from the vehicle fuel tank through the included stand pipe, or from a separate tank. Do not tap the engine's pressurized fuel lines, its filter, or its return line - the heater is not designed for that pressure.
  • Combustion air intake: combustion air must come from outside or a well-ventilated area - never from the living space, engine, or luggage compartment. Keep the intake pipe as short as possible (2 m maximum), point its opening downward, keep it at least 20 cm from the exhaust outlet so exhaust cannot be drawn back in, and do not face it into the direction of travel.
  • Exhaust: the exhaust pipe runs hot (up to 500°C in operation). Keep it to 2 m maximum, slope it slightly downward in the direction of exhaust flow, insulate it where it passes heat-sensitive parts or goes through a floor or wall, point the outlet downward, and route it so exhaust cannot enter the cabin or be drawn back in.
  • Ducting: the Air 2D uses a 60 mm duct system and the run must start at 60 mm. Keep the first meter as straight as possible - no 90° or sharp bends in that first meter - keep the whole system simple, and if you split the air to multiple outlets, one outlet must be non-closable so the heater cannot overheat.
  • Wiring: Autoterm recommends connecting directly to the vehicle or auxiliary battery with wiring heavy enough to avoid voltage drop, on an uninterrupted supply. Do not disconnect power before the heater's purge cycle finishes.
  • Care: run the heater once a month for about 20 minutes at full power, including in warm months - the manual calls this out to keep the fuel pump free of deposits.

Installation involves fuel, exhaust, and vehicle wiring. If you are not comfortable with all three, have it installed professionally - we install these at our New Port Richey shop.

How it compares

An honest side-by-side. We'd rather you buy the right model once than the wrong one twice.

Sizing honestly: the 2D is the right heater for a smaller van or cabin. A larger, poorly insulated space in hard cold is 4D territory - an undersized heater runs at maximum constantly, and an oversized one short-cycles.

Fitment

Fitment & compatibility FAQ

Is this heater diesel or gasoline?
Diesel only. The Air 2D on this listing burns diesel fuel to EN590 (Autoterm also lists HVO100 to EN15940). There is no gasoline version of this heater - if your van runs on gasoline, the heater still needs a diesel supply, drawn from a separate fuel tank.
Will a 2 kW heater heat my van?
The Air 2D is Autoterm's compact heater, made for small compartments - van conversions, campers, trucks, and boat interiors. Its output adjusts from 0.8 to 2.0 kW. For a larger or poorly insulated space, the Air 4D (1.0-4.0 kW) is the step up - see the comparison table on this page.
Does it work at altitude?
Yes. This heater is equipped with a high altitude sensor and is rated by Autoterm for work up to 4,200 m above sea level.
How much power does it draw from my batteries?
10 to 29 watts while running, depending on the set power - a low draw for overnight heating. It runs on 12V or 24V DC; pick the variant that matches your vehicle system, and connect it to an uninterrupted supply as the manual directs.
How much diesel does it use overnight?
Fuel consumption is 0.10 to 0.24 liters per hour depending on set power. At the lowest setting that is about 0.8 liters over an 8-hour night; at full power, about 1.9 liters.
Basic Kit or Truck Kit - what is the difference?
Same heater either way. The Truck Kit adds the mounting plate, a 2 ft high-temperature air duct, and the air vent. Choose the Truck Kit if your install needs those parts; choose the Basic Kit if you already have them covered.
Which controller should I choose?
All three are offered on this listing: the PU-5 is a dial controller, the PU-27 is an OLED digital controller, and the PU-28 is a touch screen controller. All are wired remote controllers - pick by how you prefer to set temperature and power.
Real answers

Questions from customers

Questions buyers have actually asked us, answered by our team. Have one we haven't covered? Email us — we answer.

Where does the fuel come from?
The heater draws diesel from the vehicle fuel tank through the included fuel pick-up stand pipe and 5.5 m fuel line, metered by the included fuel pump. A separate fuel tank also works - that is the route for a gasoline van, since this heater burns diesel regardless of what the vehicle runs on. Answered by the Master Overland team
Can I run it in serious cold?
Autoterm rates the Air series for reliable operation in low temperatures as low as -45 degrees C (-49 degrees F), using diesel fuel suited to the ambient temperature. Answered by the Master Overland team
What ducting does it use?
A 60 mm hot-air system. The duct run must start at 60 mm, the first meter should be as straight as possible with no sharp bends, and one outlet must stay non-closable if you split the air to more than one vent. Answered by the Master Overland team
How often does it need attention?
Autoterm's manual recommends running the heater once a month for about 20 minutes at full power, even in warm months, to keep the fuel pump clear of deposits, plus an annual check of fuel hoses, exhaust sealing, air ducts, and electrical connections. Answered by the Master Overland team

Terrific!

Pretty ok.

Didn't come with a fuel filter, recommended in the instructions, or the hardware (nuts & washers) to mount the heater to the mounting plate, or the heat output duct clamps. Other than that it was great! The instructions are lengthy but lack some important details, like the thread pitch of the heater mounting bolts that I had to but separately.
The Masteroverland customer service is excellent, helped me overcome most of my issues.
